Train and bus safety tips

On behalf of Advocate Law Firm Professional Law Corporation | Apr 18, 2018 | mass transit accidents

Whether you’re taking public transportation for the first time in your life or the 10th time this week alone, it’s important that you know how to do it safely. This is especially true if you are traveling with children.

To help, here are some general safety tips you should keep in mind on your next trip:

  • Never allow horseplay anywhere near the tracks or a bus stop. Children may just be pushing and shoving in fun, but one mistake can be disastrous.
  • If you miss your ride, wait for the next one. Don’t run and try to chase it down.
  • Never try to get on or off the vehicle before it has come to a complete stop.
  • If you’re waiting and the train or bus is visibly getting closer, hold your child’s hand and draw his or her attention to the vehicle.
  • Be wary of rain, fog and darkness. Always be extra careful and watch your step.
  • Do not get on a bus or a train until all of the people who are trying to get off have done so. Don’t push your way on against the general flow of the crowd.
  • After you get off, move away from the vehicle. Even if you’re waiting for someone else, do it at a safe distance.
  • Always stay within the vehicle at all times. Do not lean out or put your hands and feet out, even if doing so appears to be safe.

Unfortunately, though these tips can help, they do not prevent all accidents. If you get injured, especially through an operator or a company’s negligence, make sure you know your legal options.
