Look twice for motorcycles at left turns

On behalf of Advocate Law Firm Professional Law Corporation | May 18, 2018 | motorcycle accidents

Any time you’re going to turn left, check twice for motorcycles. Remember that intersections are one of the most hazardous places in the world for motorcycle riders, and cars that are turning left somewhere other than an intersection — such as turning into a driveway — are even more dangerous.

The problem is that many drivers do not check carefully enough and make their turns right in front of the bikes. It’s easy not to see a small, black motorcycle that blends into the pavement, especially when you’re just watching oncoming cars and waiting for a big enough gap to make the turn. What you think is a gap in that split second may actually be a motorcycle.

These wrecks are so dangerous because motorcycles are often moving at full speed, and there’s nowhere to turn to avoid the wreck except into oncoming traffic. Bikes often hit cars and trucks broadside, potentially throwing the rider right off of the bike and over the large vehicle. Those inside the car may not even suffer any injuries, protected as they are by the cage and the safety systems, but motorcyclists do not have any of the same protections. They can suffer serious head injuries, lacerations, brain injuries, fractures and much more.

So, before you turn, always give motorcycles a second glance. Make sure that turn is really clear.

Motorcyclists who get involved in these accidents often face incredible medical expenses, lost wages and similar costs. Life may never be the same. They absolutely need to know about all of the legal options they have to seek compensation.
